The German Wirehaired Pointer is a breed of dog developed in Germany in the 1800‘s for hunting. The breed is most recognizable for its weather-resistant wire coat and its facial furnishings.  German Wirehaired Pointers are affectionate, intelligent, active, and powerful.

Germany bred these dogs with the following goals in mind:

  1. Search for, locate, and point upland game

  2. Work both feather and fur with equal skill

  3. Retrieve waterfowl

  4. Be a close- working, easily trained gun dog

  5. Be able to track and locate wounded game

  6. Be fearless when hunting “sharp” game such as fox

  7. Be a devoted companion and pet

  8. Be a watchdog for its owners family and property

The German Wirehaired Pointer and the Drathaar are one in the same.  In addition, German Wirehaired Pointers are often affectionately known as The Ugly Dog.
